Dear Yuletide author,
Nov. 19th, 2011 01:43 pmMatching on any of my requests means you clearly have good taste, but on the off chance our minds aren't already operating as one, and in case you actually want to listen to me babble at excessive length about what I like to read, here's a bit about my preferences.
My requests:
Fandom: The Magicians (and sequel) - Lev Grossman
Characters: Julia, Alice
Characters: Eddis, the Magus
Fandom: Discworld - Terry Pratchett
Characters: Tiffany Aching, Granny Aching
Fandom: Vorkosigan Saga - Lois McMaster Bujold
Characters: Dr. Riva, Cordelia Naismith Vorkosigan, Ekaterin Vorsoisson
This is my first year, and I'm ridiculously excited. All the above is just in case you find this easier with additional guidance, but really I hope you'll write something you enjoy writing and you'd enjoy reading yourself. Feel free to stalk my journal and fic to your heart's content. Thank you so much for signing up!
My requests:
Fandom: The Magicians (and sequel) - Lev Grossman
Characters: Julia, Alice
I don’t particularly care when or how. Post-The Magician King would be great, or an alternate timeline (Alice chucks the Brakebills lot sometime during The Magicians, maybe, and meets Julia while she’s in training as a hedge witch; or things go differently in Fillory, and Alice rather than Janet is the second Queen), or however you can make it work. I wouldn’t at all mind femslash, but I tend to prefer gen. Either way, I’d love these two being terrifying and brilliant together in very different ways. Bonus points for really cool magic or interesting worldbuilding.
Fandom: The "Queen's Thief" series - Megan Whalen TurnerCharacters: Eddis, the Magus
In general, I don't gravitate toward non-canon ships, but this is an exception. Note, however, that I don't think it's mutually exclusive to canon ships--my personal canon is actually Eddis/politics/the Magus, where politics get so firmly in the way that neither of them acknowledges the romantic tension even privately, because there are bigger things at stake. Subtlety's the word. I'd love to read about them manoeuvring around each other and around the other political forces of their countries and Attolia, about how their political goals diverge and converge, about the reasons and ways they're willing to take advantage of one another. Any point in the timeline would be great.
Fandom: Discworld - Terry Pratchett
Characters: Tiffany Aching, Granny Aching
I fell in love with the Tiffany books when I realised Granny Aching wasn't just there to provide a bit of family history and contrast with the other witches. I love that she's this almost mythical figure who looms larger, in her way, than Granny Weatherwax. I love that she's identified so strongly with the Chalk. I love that Tiffany has to go back and reassemble her image of her grandmother as she learns more about being a witch. I would adore anything touching on their relationship, pre-, during-, and/or post-series. (Some Granny Weatherwax would be a bonus, but she's not required.)
Fandom: Vorkosigan Saga - Lois McMaster Bujold
Characters: Dr. Riva, Cordelia Naismith Vorkosigan, Ekaterin Vorsoisson
...all right, this one's a bit of a crapshoot. Riva is my favourite non-recurring character in the series, brilliant and self-possessed enough to take Miles thoroughly aback, and complex and thoughtful enough to react in terribly intriguing ways to both fast-penta and the threat against Barrayar. I'd love to see her interacting with the other characters at a later date. The interaction wouldn't have to be direct, and she wouldn't need to be the primary character in the story--it's fine if she's just a grace-note. If you can't see your way to working her into the story, I'd be all right with that. Possible story ideas with the other two could include explorations of their relationship with Nikolai, politics on Barrayar, or something post-Cryoburn. Gregor would be a bonus, whether or not I get Riva.

Date: 2011-11-19 08:24 pm (UTC)I wanted to offer all of the fandoms you're requesting, but I just didn't think I could write them with much ease. I hope your Yuletide writer does something amazing with your prompts, they're great!
